We begin every project by getting a sense of your vision. Then, we build a plan for your outdoor space that fits perfectly with your goals, lifestyle and budget.
The homeowners’ vision: a garden space that acts as an extension of their art studio. We created a plan for plant life, stonework, privacy screening—all working together to bring visual intrigue and simple elegance to a small space. Today, this artist’s garden engages the imagination, while providing spaces for all occasions, whether it’s quiet contemplation or lively entertainment.
Designed with the artist in mind, the comfortable space has seating for relaxing and enjoying. The space is also in direct view from the artist studio providing inspiration and lovely viewing of the pollinator garden nearby.
This patio, closest to the home is large enough to accommodate family and friends. The patio is flanked by a beautiful crabapple tree that provides spring interest and a lovely serviceberry that attracts birds and natural screening from the driveway.
The pollinator garden has many layers of ground cover, mounds, and upright plants in various colors (yellow, chartreuse, lavender and burgundy) to provide interest to the eye. The diverse native cultivars attract bees and butterflies. The bird bath, located at its center is framed by upright arborvitaes on both sides of the rectangular garden.
The homeowner had an old pergola that is now an elegant screening fence. Spotlights accent the panels and nearby plants. The studio patio also features a simple pergola added for screening and to create visual interest.
Larger pavers contrast the small rectangular pavers used for the property’s driveway. Garden areas are outlined in vintage red bricks to incorporate existing colors and architecture.
Prairie drop seed planted around the serviceberry tree softens the area surrounded by pavers. Giant white hydrangeas brighten the garden and add texture and height. In the pollinator garden, multiple layers and levels create visual appeal, while the spiky form of the allium adds dynamic. Chartreuse ground cover contrasts beautifully against burgundy heuchera.
